Nestled in the granite outcrops near present day Mavingo are the ancient buildings of Great Zimbabwe. Today Great Zimbabwe remains the largest surviving ancient structure in sub-Saharan Africa.  The ruins are the remains of several powerful civilisations that were prominent in the area from 300 ~ 1833 A.D., one of which was the Kingdom of Munhumatapa which traded gold and ivory for oriental luxuries with Arabs on the Indian Ocean coast and the influence of the kingdom extended for over 400km and was at it's peak in around 1450.
